We had a wonderful day of relaxation and fellowship in the classroom today! Thanks to all parents and guardians for supporting your children in making our gift exchange a success.

Upcoming field trip: Our class will be spending 3 afternoons throughout January at Granite Curling Club, learning how to curl! We will need at least 1 parent volunteer for each of the following dates. No curling experience required!

Tomorrow we will be spending the morning decorating Gingerbread houses! There is a note coming home with details today. We organized ourselves into small groups today. There is a small amount of candy that is included with each kit. If students wish, they can bring additional treats to use as decoration tomorrow. Reminder that any food brought into the class must be nut free.

Our Christmas Hamper was donated to a family in need today. Thanks to all who brought donations!

Health - Today we finished Theme 3, with a discussion about growing up, and earning freedoms as we get older by proving that we are responsible. Each student had a chance to reflect on the theme, and is bringing one last handout home to discuss with their parent/guardian. This page should go back into your health book.

Religion - We had more time to work on our Advent Flip-book assignment. This is due by the end of the day on the 20th.

Social - We had some time today to work on our Canadian Travel Brochures. These are due on Friday.

Arts - Today we spent art class in the Art room, painting our acrylic winter landscapes! Most students finished their paintings today, a few will get one more class to complete them.

Math - Today was our last class to work on this unit instruction. We worked on solving equations that include division and multiplication. Complete and hand this page in for tomorrow.
Tomorrow, we will start our Unit Reviews. Our unit test is on Tuesday, December 17th.

Due to today's band concert, our Unit 8 Spelling Quiz was moved to tomorrow.

Secret Angel - Next week, we will be running a Secret Angel activity in our classroom. It will run from the 16th to the 20th, with nice gestures or acts of kindness happening from Monday to Thursday, and a small gift ($10 limit) being opened on Friday morning. We took some time today to talk about what nice gestures or gifts would look like. There is a note coming home today with more details. You can view the note HERE.

Math - Today we worked on solving equations with multiplication and division. Complete the assignment for tomorrow: Pg 27-28, Qs 4-6.

Social Studies - We got more time to work on the good copies of our Brochures. Reminder that this is due on Friday.

Health - In Fully Alive today, we discussed human fertility. Each student is bringing home a handout with what they learned about male and female fertility, as well as any questions they still have. Please take the time to discuss this with your parents tonight.

Math - Today we learned how to use Inspection or Isolation strategies to solve equations using addition and subtraction. Please complete our assignment for tomorrow. Pg 24-25 Q 1-8(9).

Religion - We had more time to complete our Jesus and his Family assignment, which is due tomorrow. Remember to complete the Reflection question in your reflection journal.

Health - Today we learned about the major organs of the male and female reproduction systems. Each student is bringing home a sheet listing what they learned today, as well as any questions they still have. Please take the time to discuss this with your parents, and ask any future questions.

Arts- Today we started our Christmas art project! Over the next 2 weeks, we will be working on painting Christmas/winter inspired canvases, which will be brought home on the 20th.

Social Studies - Deadline to complete your Canadian Travel Brochure rough copy is tomorrow.

Christmas Hampers - Notes were sent home yesterday for each student, with what they have been assigned to bring as a donation for our class' Christmas hamper to help a family in need. You can bring your non-perishable items any time from now until December 16th.

ELA - Today some of us had time to research a school to write our letter to in the Great Canadian Mail Race. We will have more time to research this later this week.

Math - We continued practicing creating equations with variables to describe word problems. Finish and hand in the practice page for tomorrow.

Religion - Today we read through the bible passages describing Jesus' birth, and had a short assignment associated with it. This should be completed for Thursday. We will have more time to work on it tomorrow.

Social - We had more time to work on our Travel Brochures. The rough copy is due to be complete by Thursday at the latest.

Today, we had a class meeting, discussing many of the events we have planned during the month of December. We discussed the following events:
  December 16th - Deadline to bring non perishable Christmas Hamper donations. Perishable items should come the morning of December 17th. - Note sent home today.
  December 16th - Swimming Field Trip - Note sent home today. Please fill it out and return it by Dec 10th. Due to our Division's new swimming safety guidelines, we will need some parent volunteers to help with supervision.
  December 18th - Gingerbread Houses - Note will come home next week.
  December 20th - Class Gift Exchange - Names drawn and notes sent home next week.

Math - Today we practiced using variables in equations, in order to solve word problems. We will have more time to work on our assignment tomorrow.

ELA - Today we started a new task, titled the Great Canadian Mail Race! Each student will write a letter to a Grade 5 student somewhere in Canada. The first in our class to receive a letter back wins! You can view the assignment HERE.

Arts - Please complete your pointilism for Monday. We are starting a new Arts task next week.

Health - Today we started Theme 3 in Fully Alive. We discussed many of the important systems in our body that keep us alive and healthy. Then, we discussed the Reproductive System, and how it is similar and different to the other systems in our body.
Each lesson in Theme 3, a Family Connections page will be sent home. Please use this to discuss what you are learning with your parents, and answer the questions on the page together with them.

Math - Today we learned some new terms, such as variable, and expression. We used these terms to describe patterns. Complete the assignment for tomorrow. Pg 15-16, 1-5, 8 (6,7)

Social - Today was the last class-time made available for researching our Province brochures. We will do a homework check first thing tomorrow morning.

Creative Writing - We have had many students read their original stories to the class! Reminder that all students must share at least 1 original story with the class by Christmas.

Math - Today we practiced viewing patterns in a table form, and using them to solve problems. Complete our assignment for tomorrow. Pg 11-12, Qs 2-4 (5,6)

Spelling - Today we wrote our quiz on Week 7, and got our Week 8 word lists.

Health -Today, students are bringing home an information letter for parents/guardians about Theme 3 in Fully Alive. Parents, please take the time to read through this information, and discuss these topics with your child as they are covered here in class. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Social Studies - In order to stay on track for this assignment, you should have your research for your Canadian Travel Brochure completed by the end of the day tomorrow. I will be doing a homework check on this.

Health - Today we finished up Theme 2 in Fully Alive by reading a story about a bullying event, and discussing the consequences of the actions of the students involved. We got a short assignment to read over common friendship proverbs, and describe what each means. Complete this assignment for tomorrow.

Spelling - We had more time today to work on our Week 7 word lists. We will have a quiz tomorrow.

Math - Today we started the first lesson of our new unit, and reviewed patterns and pattern rules. Complete Pg. 8, Qs 1, 3-5 (7,8) for tomorrow.

Math - Today we put our computation skills to work! We practiced multi-step word problems. Remember: What is being asked? What do I need to find out first?
We worked very well during class time, so today's assignment, Pg 111, Qs 2-6, is not due for homework tomorrow.

Spelling - Today we had time to work on our Week 6 worksheets. We will have a quiz on Wednesday.

Math - Today we had a short check-in quiz, then time to work on our assignment: Pg 106/107, Qs 5, 6, 7, 9 (8, 10). We have a unit test coming up, on November 20th. We will get our Unit Reviews on Friday.

Creative Writing - Reminder that all students must write and share at least 1 story by Christmas. We will get more time to work on this regularly during class time.

Health - Today we talked about our Family Rules, and had some time to reflect on the special people in our families.

We will be walking to St. Peter the Apostle Church to celebrate Mass together as a school community. Several students from our class have volunteered to be our readers! We will be leaving immediately at 9:00 on Thursday, so do not be late! Be in your desk for second bell for attendance, with your coat on and ready to leave. Dress warm!

We had a great field trip to the Remai Art Gallery today! Our class were wonderful representatives of St. Peter School.

Math - We continued working on division, and on using multiplication to check a division answer. We will have a homework check tomorrow on Pg 106, Q 1.

ELA - Today, most groups presented their Prepared Oral Readings. Fantastic work! The rest of our groups will present tomorrow.

Term 1 Assignment Deadline on Thursday. After this time, all assignments still not handed in will be weighted as a 1 on Term 1 report cards. We have had substantial "catch up" time in class this week. Be sure to work on these tasks in the evening, if you still have items due from your Assignment Audits.

Math - We are continuing our work on division skills. We have covered 2 strategies in class: the Long Division method and the Subtraction method. Students should choose the strategy that they prefer. We will have a homework check tomorrow on today's textbook assignment, Pg 102, Qs 1, 4, 6 (3, 7, 8)

ELA - We had more time to practice our Prepared Oral Readings. We will present these tomorrow!

Religion - We had one more class to finish our Peace Begins With Me assignments. These were due today.

At 3:30 on Thursday, any assigned work that is not handed in will be weighted as a "1" towards Term 1 report cards. (It will still be graded if handed in after that, but not until after Term 1 report cards are written.) Students were each given a personalized "Assignment Audit" today, which included a list of all missing assignments they have from this Term.

Religion - Today we discussed Remembrance Day, an the purpose for wearing poppies next week. We brainstormed ways that we as individuals can make the world a more peaceful place. We started a task titled, "Peace Begins With Me", where we write and decorate a poppy with ways that we can bring peace into our own lives.

Spelling - Today we wrote our Week 5 Quiz. We will get our Week 6 words on Monday.

ELA - We were tasked with annotating our own copy of "In the Doghouse", and preparing to read it to our classmates, being sure to add emphasis and vary the tone of our voice to convey meaning. The assignment can be found HERE, and the story HERE. We will doing our prepared oral readings on Wednesday.

Math - Today we had more time to practice our skills from this week. If any student is still not confident multiplying a 2 digit number by another 2 digit number, they should work on this skill with their parent/guardian over the weekend. Parents/guardians, please check in with your child on this skill over the weekend.

Arts - We had more time to work on our Pointilism tasks.

ELA - Today we went over the conventions for including dialogue in our writing. Students were tasked with writing a short (1/2 -1 page) scene that includes dialogue, using the proper dialogue rules. This task should include a rough and good copy, and is due on Thursday.

Social Studies - We will be having a quiz on Canadian Government and the Federal Election on Wednesday, October 30th. Students received their reviews today.

Today we had several guests to our classroom! 4 parents visited us to speak about their careers, and the role that learning and cooperation plays in their success. A big thank you to our guest speakers!

Picture Retakes on Tuesday. If you are interested in getting retakes, you need to bring your proofs from your original photos to school on Tuesday.

Health - If you did not finish your coat of arms today, hand it in on Monday.

Math - Today we learned a mental-math strategy for multiplying any one-digit number by any two-digit number in our heads.

Today we had time to get together with our House League teams and prepare for our Gym Blast tomorrow!

Spelling - We got our Week 5 word lists today.

Computers - We completed a survey today to give anonymous feedback about the St. Peter School Community.

Science - We had our Science quizzes today! We corrected them during class time, so students will know their marks.

Health - Family Coat of Arms due tomorrow.

Education Week - This week is Education Week in Canada! Our theme is "Working and Learning Together". Our class will be participating in a few activities throughout the week. Today we worked together with our care partners to help them with their academics. Later in the week, we will be participating in a class co-operative challenge in the gym with Mr. Goodman. On Friday, we will have a few parents come in to discuss what they do for a living and how education and on-going learning are important in their jobs. Thanks to all parents who have volunteered their time to support our students!

Social - Today is Election Day! Tomorrow, we will discuss the outcome of the election, and begin discussing what it means for Canadians.
Reminder that 2 assignments from Friday were due today: Debate Viewing response and your Student Vote response.

Science - Mr. Goodman has scheduled a Science test on Thursday. Students received their study guides today.

Spelling - We will be having a Week 4 quiz on Wednesday.

ELA - "Gross" story assignment was due today.

Health - Today we started Theme 2 in Fully Alive, titled "Living in Relationship". We discussed Families today, and talked about ways that all families are similar, and ways they are all unique. Students started an assignment to design a "Coat of Arms" for their own family, along with a short description of what each section represents. These are due on Friday.

Social Studies - Today was a big day for the Federal Election in our classroom! We started the day by watching the highlights of the Federal Party Leader's debate, and filled in a viewing response, available HEREhttps://drive.google.com/open?id=1nxHPuK_1bJHTv_afDecjK9cjQKnIBlcV. Then, we had time to come to our own conclusion about which Party best represents our own individual views, and wrote about it HERE. We ended the morning by Voting in our Nation-wide Student Election!

ELA - Gross story assignment is due Monday.

Math - We got back our Unit 2 tests today on Whole Numbers today. Students will be bringing home their tests today, to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to school by October 23rd.

Social Studies - Our class had 1 more session in the computer lab to complete our research on the party platforms. Tomorrow we will be participating in a nation-wide Student Vote! We recieved our voter identification cards today! Complete and hand in your platform research assignment ASAP.

ELA - "Gross" Story assignment is due on Monday.

Math - Today we worked on using the Repeated Doubling and Repeated Halving as a strategy for mental math. We will have time to complete the assignment tomorrow.

Today we got a new seating plan! We will stay in these places until December.

Today we took time to discuss safety and lockdown procedures in the classroom. We will have a school-wide lockdown practice early next week.

The last day to bring in donations for Friendship Inn is tomorrow. They will be picking up the donations at lunch tomorrow.

Education week is next week, from Oct 21-25th. It is a week where schools across the country are coming together to celebrate the role that education plays in our lives, under the theme "Working and Learning Together." 
In the spirit of this theme, we are inviting parents/guardians into each classroom in our school to share the role that on-going learning plays in their workplace. If you are interested in coming into the classroom and speaking with class, a note will be coming home today with more details. You can view the note HERE.

Social - We had more time in the computer lab to research the platforms of political parties in our Federal Election. This assignment is due on Thursday.

Math - Today we started our new unit: Multiplication and Division. We started by defining terms such as factor, product, dividend, divisor, and quotient. Then we made flash cards that we can use throughout the unit to practice our multiplication facts. Then we worked on an assignment: Pg 74-75, Qs 1, 3, 5-10 (2, 4, 11)

ELA - Today we read a short story in our Nelson Literacy textbooks, called "Gross". We practiced creating a story map while we read, to keep track of important facts and plot points. The assignment that came along with it is due on Monday.

ELA - Pre-writing tasks were due today

Social Studies - Today we learned about how our Canadian Parliament is selected, and how a Canadian election works to select Members of Parliament and a Prime Minister. We explored some of the major issues facing voters this election.
In preparation for our election on October 21st, each student will have a chance over the coming weeks to research the platform of each major political party, and come to their own informed opinion.

Religion - Gospel Timeline is due Monday.

Math - Today we started our Unit Reviews, in preparation for Wednesday's test on Whole Numbers. The reviews, as well as the Unit Problem, are due to be completed for Tuesday.

Donations - We are still accepting donations of non-perishable foods for the Friendship Inn. They have specifically asked for cereal, but all non-perishables are welcome. Any donation will earn you a "fish", for giving to those in need and acting as Jesus would.

Math - Today we looked at different strategies to estimate large whole numbers, including Compensation, Front-End rounding, and Compatible Numbers. Complete Pg 51-52, Qs 4-7, 12 (1-3, 9, 13).
The date of our first Math Test has been set for Wednesday, October 9th. We will start our Unit Review on Friday, and it will be due Tuesday.

Health - Today we discussed the ways that we grow at different stages throughout our lives. We discussed the "5 Selves" that make up each person, including our Physical, Emotional, Spiritual, Intellectual, and Social selves.

ELA - Today we had more time to work on our Pre-writing task, which is due Friday.

Religion - Today we had more time to work on our Gospel Timeline task, which is due Friday.

Spelling - As we wrote our Week 2 quiz last week, we got our Week 3 word lists today.

Math - Today we practiced using estimation to check our answers when doing questions with large numbers. The assignment was quite long, and our class worked very well, so it is not due for homework. We will get more time to work on it tomorrow.

Religion - Today we had a chance to do some reflection journalling about residential schools and orange T-Shirt day.

Social - Today we discussed what type of government we have here in Canada: The Parliamentary Democracy.

Arts - Today we explored the concept of negative space, and started a new task where we hide our names within an optical illusion.

Math - Today we had more chance to practice our rounding skills. The class worked very well today, so there is no math homework over the weekend.

Orange Shirt Day on Monday - Wear an orange t-shirt on Monday in honour and solidarity with residential school survivors.
Arts - We had a chance to create orange t-shirt designs with the logo, "Every Child Matters."

Health - We discussed a fictional situation where a student made a mistake and had to take responisibility for it. Each student will be taking home a "Family Connections" worksheet. Please read over and complete this with a parent/guardian.

Daily 5 - Today we started working on epic! using the iPads, as our Listen to Reading portion of Daily 5. We will now have 5 options each Daily 5 period.

Health - Today we started Theme 1 of Fully Alive, titled Created and Loved by God. We talked about how each person has a unique story and attributes.

Religion - Today we introduced a new assignment, to create and illustrate a timeline of the Gospel. We will have more time to work on this in class.

ELA - Today we learned how to use RAFTS, a pre-writing strategy. We had a short practice assignment with it, which is due Tuesday.

Health - Today we discussed what it means to have a Growth mindset, and worked on re-wording Fixed mindset phrases to focus on growth and improvement. These are posted at the back of our classroom.

Computers - Today we continued working on our typing program. Complete lessons on Typing.com up to and including Beginner Review 1 by next Thursday.

Spelling - Today we got our lists for Week 2.

Health - Today we had more time to work on our Anti-Bullying assignments. We decided on a due date together, which will be Friday.

Math - Today we explored large whole numbers up to 1 MILLION!!!! We started working on our assignment, Pg 41-42, Qs 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 (1, 4, 6), but we will get more time to work on this tomorrow.

Today we had a care partner activity, and reflected on ways to show love and kindness.

ELA - Today we started our Creative Writing program! Students can use this to write narratives about any topic they wish, and share these stories with the class. We will hand in our Creative Writing books at the end of each term, and be assessed based on our Pre-writing, Drafting, and Edits/Revisions.

Math - Complete our extra practice worksheet on Numbers to 100,000 and hand it in by tomorrow.

ELA - Tomorrow, we will be starting our Creative Writing program. Please bring your duotang with front and back pockets by tomorrow!

Today we had our Welcome Week assembly, and participated in the Terry Fox walk. Donations will still be accepted until tomorrow, so it's not too late to donate!

Math - Today we had our first lesson of Grade 5 math, hooray! We recieved our textbooks, which will stay in our desks throughout the year. We explored the place value of whole numbers up to 100,000, and practiced using our place-value charts. Finish today's assignment for tomorrow: Pg 38, Qs 2-6(7)
A note on math assignments: Most sets of assignment questions will include extra questions in brackets at the end. These questions are more advanced, and are open to students who would like to challenge themselves. When we have homework checks, these questions will not be required as part of the check.

Health - At St. Peter school, each classroom will have important discussions about bullying at the start of each school year. We started our discussions today, and we explored who is involved in a bullying situation. Students started a short writing assignment, available HERE.

Care Partners - Today we met our Care Partners for the year! We have been matched to work with Miss Frey's Grade 1 class. Next week, we will have more opportunities to get to know our new care partners, during the Terry Fox Walk, as well as care partner activity on Wednesday.

Spelling - We will have our Week 1 quiz on Tuesday.

Math - Today we started our first math unit. We will actually be starting with the textbook Unit 2 - Whole Numbers. Each unit will follow the same basic format: We will begin with a pre-assessment to provide a base-line of prior knowledge. Then we will end the unit with a post-assessment. Both of these will appear side-by-side in our portfolios, to demonstrate our growth.
Please note - Pre-assessments are written BEFORE the unit has been covered in class. Do not worry if you struggle on a pre-assessment, we'll have plenty of time to learn the concepts each unit.

If you signed up for Cross Country, practices begin on Monday! Our meets are on September 25th and October 2nd.

Thursday, September 12th, 2019

Math - Today we corrected the Patterns and Equations section of our Grade 4 reviews. Then we wrote the Basic Concepts of Math assessment, to help us find a starting point for our math levels going into Grade 5. Tomorrow, we will start Unit 1.

Today we had a class-wide rock/paper/scissors tournament, to crown our class champion, who will be representing us at the school-wide championship at our opening assembly on Monday morning. Congratulations to Grady Friesen, who was victorious!

ELA - We continued to practice and build our Stamina during our Daily 5 routines.

Computers - Today we officially started our typing lessons. Complete up to  the end of the beginner lessons on U, R, and K keys by next computer class (next Thursday).

Religion - Today we had our first Talking Circle. Our class will meet in Talking Circle every Thursday morning, to come together as a community and explore some of our religion and health topics in a group discussion setting where every voice is valued and heard.

On Monday, our school will be participating in a Terry Fox walk. Today we spent time discussing who Terry was, and why he ran. Until Monday, students are encouraged to bring donations for cancer research. Our goal is to raise 1 dollar for each student at our school, just as Terry hoped to raise 1 dollar for every Canadian. Please bring any donations by Monday.

ELA - Today we introduced our Daily 5 program. We will start every typical school day with Daily 5, from 9-9:45. Today we practiced the expectations for "Read to Self", and "Read to Someone". 

Spelling - Today we had more time to practice our Week 1 word lists.

Math - Today we completed our review of Grade 4 math by exploring Patterns and Equations. Please complete your entire review for tomorrow.

Social - Today we had more time to work on our Map of Canada task. This task will be due on Monday.

Arts - We had more time to finish up creating our Art Portfolios, that will house our art projects throughout the year.

Schools win twice raffle tickets were sent home today. This is an important fundraiser that supports our Community Council. Each booklet is accompanied by a detailed set of instructions for families. All tickets must be returned, sold or unsold, by September 25th.

Today we had our first session in the Library. We will regularly have library circulation on Tuesday mornings. All students are expected to have at least 1 long-read chapter book in their desks at all times.
We also received our monthly Book Reviews! One book review will be due to be completed and handed in on the last school day of every month. Our first book reviews are due on September 30th.

Creative Writing - All students are to bring 1 additional duotang for use as a Creative Writing book. This duotang must have front and back pockets. Please bring this for Monday.

Arts - Today we worked on creating and designing our own art portfolios, to house our ongoing art tasks this year.

Many students returned their note packages today. Be sure to return yours by Friday.

Friday, September 6th, 2019

Today a package of very important notes were sent home with each student. Please have your parent/guardian read and fill out these notes, and return them to Mr. Saganski by Friday, Sept. 13th. The package includes:
  -Student Data Verification Form
  -Field Trip Consent Form
  -Media Release Form
  -Noon Lunch Registration Form
  -Technology Acceptable Use Policy

ELA - Today we completed a short 30-minute writing sample, to serve as a reference point when demonstrating our growth throughout the year.

Math - We continued our review of Grade 4 math. Today, we reviewed Decimals. Complete Questions 9-13 for Monday.

Religion - Today we discussed what it means to ask ourselves "What Would Jesus Do?". We are each decorating a small logo illustrating what we can do to act as Jesus would, which will hang in our classroom above our doorway.

Thursday, September 5th, 2019

Newsletters were sent home today, with the youngest student from each family at St. Peter. If you are the youngest in your family that attends this school, bring your newsletter home to your parents.

A note was sent home today with details about Picture Day, which will be on Thursday, September 19th for Grade 5 students.

ELA - Today we started our first assignment of Grade 5, which tasked us with creating and illustrating a chronological timeline of our lives.

Math - Over the next week, we will be reviewing Grade 4 math. Today, we covered place value. Complete Questions 1-8 for tomorrow.

Computers - Today we had our first day in the computer lab. We spent most of the time trouble-shooting technical issues, but we also had a chance to introduce Typing.com! All students in the class have a username and password, which follow this format:
         Username: (firstname)(lastinitial)stpeter
         Password: saganski
Feel free to log in to typing.com at home and practice! We will assign lessons to be completed as homework at different times throughout the year.

Wednesday, September 4th, 2019

Today we had a tour of the classroom and discussed our general classroom procedures.

We spent much of the morning unpacking our school supplies and organizing our workspace.

If you had any school supplies that were missing, please bring them to school ASAP. If there is any difficulty in getting these school supplies, please have your parents send me an email, and I can find supplemental supplies for you.

All students are asked to bring 1 additional Duotang that was not on the school supply list, by the end of next week. This duotang must have front and back pockets.

This afternoon, we spent time as a class discussing and writing our class rules. These rules were printed and signed by all members of our class, and are on display at the back of the room. There are also available HERE.

Welcome to the 2019/2020 school year!
This morning, we got to know eachother with a name game, wrote nametags for our desks, and talked about some classroom expectations.

Each student will be bringing home a note, to read with their parent/guardian. Please go through this note with your child, and fill out/return the last page by September 6th. The note can be viewed HERE.

Tomorrow, we will be unpacking our school supplies.

New School Year

Wow, that summer went by fast! I hope you are all enjoying the final days of summer holidays with your families, before school resumes on September 3rd.
