Our Pictures have arrived! A package has been sent home with each child. If you would like to order photos, please return your order to me by Tuesday, October 8th.

Spelling - As we wrote our Week 2 quiz last week, we got our Week 3 word lists today.

Math - Today we practiced using estimation to check our answers when doing questions with large numbers. The assignment was quite long, and our class worked very well, so it is not due for homework. We will get more time to work on it tomorrow.

Religion - Today we had a chance to do some reflection journalling about residential schools and orange T-Shirt day.

Social - Today we discussed what type of government we have here in Canada: The Parliamentary Democracy.

Arts - Today we explored the concept of negative space, and started a new task where we hide our names within an optical illusion.

Cross Country City Championship meet is on Wednesday. Arrival times for athletes in our class are below:

Math - Today we had more chance to practice our rounding skills. The class worked very well today, so there is no math homework over the weekend.

ELA - Our September Book Reviews are due on Monday.

Orange Shirt Day on Monday - Wear an orange t-shirt on Monday in honour and solidarity with residential school survivors.
Arts - We had a chance to create orange t-shirt designs with the logo, "Every Child Matters."

Religion - We had more time to work on our Gospel Timeline assignments. These are due on Thursday.

Health - We discussed a fictional situation where a student made a mistake and had to take responisibility for it. Each student will be taking home a "Family Connections" worksheet. Please read over and complete this with a parent/guardian.

Math - Today we worked on using rounding to estimate subtraction questions with large whole numbers. Complete the assignment for tomorrow Pg 58-59, Qs 1, 3, 6, 7 (2, 5, 8)

Spelling - Today we had one more period to quiz each other on our Week 2 words. Our quiz is tomorrow.

Computers - Today we had a chance to log on and explore in Mathletics.com. Each student has log in information stapled into their Math books. Feel free to work on Mathletics at home for extra practice.

Math - Today we worked on extra practice for using rounding to estimate. Complete and hand this in for tomorrow.

Religion - Today we had more time to work on our Gospel Timeline Assignment. This will be due later next week.

Social - Today we completed our discussion and notes on the different types of governments.

ELA - Today we had time to finish our RAFTS assignment. This is due tomorrow.

Spelling - Today we had more time to work on our Week 2 spelling words.

ELA - Today we had time in the Library for circulation. Reminder that our first Book Reviews are due on Monday.

Math - Today we worked on using benchmark rounding to estimate with large numbers. Our assignment was Pg 55-56, Qs 1 – 8 (9-12).

Social Studies - Today we explored different types of governments from nations around the world, and examined their advantages and disadvantages.

Daily 5 - Today we started working on epic! using the iPads, as our Listen to Reading portion of Daily 5. We will now have 5 options each Daily 5 period.

Math - Today we had time to work on a homework practice sheet for representing large numbers. Complete and hand this in for tomorrow.

Health - Today we started Theme 1 of Fully Alive, titled Created and Loved by God. We talked about how each person has a unique story and attributes.

Religion - Today we introduced a new assignment, to create and illustrate a timeline of the Gospel. We will have more time to work on this in class.

Math - Today we worked on representing large whole numbers in different ways. Complete the assignment for Monday - Pg 45-47, Qs 1, 3, 6, 8-11, 13 (2, 4, 7, 12, 15)

Spelling - Today we had more time to work on our Week 2 lists. We will have a quiz on these words later next week.

Health - Today we had time to reflect on our own Growth mindset. Then we had time to finish our Anti-Bullying assignment. This was due today. If it is not yet handed in, complete and hand it in for Monday.

ELA - Today we learned how to use RAFTS, a pre-writing strategy. We had a short practice assignment with it, which is due Tuesday.

Bake Sale on Thursday.

We will be starting the Fully Alive program on Monday. Notes were taken home today with more information about the program.

Math - We had more time to finish yesterday's assignment. Pg 41-42, Qs 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 (1, 4, 6). Please finish these for tomorrow.

Health - Today we discussed what it means to have a Growth mindset, and worked on re-wording Fixed mindset phrases to focus on growth and improvement. These are posted at the back of our classroom.
Anti-Bullying perspectives is due tomorrow. We will get more time to work on it tomorrow.

Computers - Today we continued working on our typing program. Complete lessons on Typing.com up to and including Beginner Review 1 by next Thursday.

Meet the Teacher night tonight! BBQ starts at 5:30. I will be in my classroom from 6-7.

Spelling - Today we got our lists for Week 2.

Health - Today we had more time to work on our Anti-Bullying assignments. We decided on a due date together, which will be Friday.

Math - Today we explored large whole numbers up to 1 MILLION!!!! We started working on our assignment, Pg 41-42, Qs 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 (1, 4, 6), but we will get more time to work on this tomorrow.

Today we had a care partner activity, and reflected on ways to show love and kindness.

Picture Day tomorrow!

ELA - Today we started our Creative Writing program! Students can use this to write narratives about any topic they wish, and share these stories with the class. We will hand in our Creative Writing books at the end of each term, and be assessed based on our Pre-writing, Drafting, and Edits/Revisions. 
If you do not have a duotang with front and back pockets yet, please bring one ASAP.

Math - Complete our extra practice worksheet on Numbers to 100,000 and hand it in by tomorrow.

Picture Day on Thursday.
Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday, from 5:30 to 7pm.

Spelling - We wrote our Week 1 quizzes today. We will get our Week 2 words tomorrow.

Today we had a chance to celebrate Mass together as a school. Special thanks to Fr. Clement for presiding over our Mass.

ELA - Tomorrow, we will be starting our Creative Writing program. Please bring your duotang with front and back pockets by tomorrow!

Today we had our Welcome Week assembly, and participated in the Terry Fox walk. Donations will still be accepted until tomorrow, so it's not too late to donate!

Math - Today we had our first lesson of Grade 5 math, hooray! We recieved our textbooks, which will stay in our desks throughout the year. We explored the place value of whole numbers up to 100,000, and practiced using our place-value charts. Finish today's assignment for tomorrow: Pg 38, Qs 2-6(7)
A note on math assignments: Most sets of assignment questions will include extra questions in brackets at the end. These questions are more advanced, and are open to students who would like to challenge themselves. When we have homework checks, these questions will not be required as part of the check.

Terry Fox Walk on Monday - Reminder that you can still bring donations for cancer research on Monday. Thank you to all who have donated!

Next week is Welcome Week! We have the following school events planned to celebrate the start of a new school year:

Wednesday - Care Partner Activity
Thursday - Picture Day and Meet the Teacher Night
Friday - Hot Lunch and Spirit Day (Opposite/Backwards Day)

Social Studies - Canada Map is due on Monday.

Health - At St. Peter school, each classroom will have important discussions about bullying at the start of each school year. We started our discussions today, and we explored who is involved in a bullying situation. Students started a short writing assignment, available HERE.

Care Partners - Today we met our Care Partners for the year! We have been matched to work with Miss Frey's Grade 1 class. Next week, we will have more opportunities to get to know our new care partners, during the Terry Fox Walk, as well as care partner activity on Wednesday.

Spelling - We will have our Week 1 quiz on Tuesday.

Math - Today we started our first math unit. We will actually be starting with the textbook Unit 2 - Whole Numbers. Each unit will follow the same basic format: We will begin with a pre-assessment to provide a base-line of prior knowledge. Then we will end the unit with a post-assessment. Both of these will appear side-by-side in our portfolios, to demonstrate our growth.
Please note - Pre-assessments are written BEFORE the unit has been covered in class. Do not worry if you struggle on a pre-assessment, we'll have plenty of time to learn the concepts each unit.

If you signed up for Cross Country, practices begin on Monday! Our meets are on September 25th and October 2nd.

Math - Today we corrected the Patterns and Equations section of our Grade 4 reviews. Then we wrote the Basic Concepts of Math assessment, to help us find a starting point for our math levels going into Grade 5. Tomorrow, we will start Unit 1.

Today we had a class-wide rock/paper/scissors tournament, to crown our class champion, who will be representing us at the school-wide championship at our opening assembly on Monday morning. Congratulations to Grady Friesen, who was victorious!

ELA - We continued to practice and build our Stamina during our Daily 5 routines.

Computers - Today we officially started our typing lessons. Complete up to  the end of the beginner lessons on U, R, and K keys by next computer class (next Thursday).

Religion - Today we had our first Talking Circle. Our class will meet in Talking Circle every Thursday morning, to come together as a community and explore some of our religion and health topics in a group discussion setting where every voice is valued and heard.

On Monday, our school will be participating in a Terry Fox walk. Today we spent time discussing who Terry was, and why he ran. Until Monday, students are encouraged to bring donations for cancer research. Our goal is to raise 1 dollar for each student at our school, just as Terry hoped to raise 1 dollar for every Canadian. Please bring any donations by Monday.

ELA - Today we introduced our Daily 5 program. We will start every typical school day with Daily 5, from 9-9:45. Today we practiced the expectations for "Read to Self", and "Read to Someone". 

Spelling - Today we had more time to practice our Week 1 word lists.

Math - Today we completed our review of Grade 4 math by exploring Patterns and Equations. Please complete your entire review for tomorrow.

Social - Today we had more time to work on our Map of Canada task. This task will be due on Monday.

Arts - We had more time to finish up creating our Art Portfolios, that will house our art projects throughout the year.

Schools win twice raffle tickets were sent home today. This is an important fundraiser that supports our Community Council. Each booklet is accompanied by a detailed set of instructions for families. All tickets must be returned, sold or unsold, by September 25th.

Today we had our first session in the Library. We will regularly have library circulation on Tuesday mornings. All students are expected to have at least 1 long-read chapter book in their desks at all times.
We also received our monthly Book Reviews! One book review will be due to be completed and handed in on the last school day of every month. Our first book reviews are due on September 30th.

Creative Writing - All students are to bring 1 additional duotang for use as a Creative Writing book. This duotang must have front and back pockets. Please bring this for Monday.

Religion - Our WWJD assignment is due tomorrow.

Math - Today we continued our review of Grade 4 math by exploring fractions. Complete Questions 22-31 for tomorrow.

Math - Today we continued our review of Grade 4 math, and explored multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. Complete questions 14-21 for tomorrow

Today a package of very important notes were sent home with each student. Please have your parent/guardian read and fill out these notes, and return them to Mr. Saganski by Friday, Sept. 13th. The package includes:
  -Student Data Verification Form
  -Field Trip Consent Form
  -Media Release Form
  -Noon Lunch Registration Form
  -Technology Acceptable Use Policy

ELA - Today we completed a short 30-minute writing sample, to serve as a reference point when demonstrating our growth throughout the year.

Math - We continued our review of Grade 4 math. Today, we reviewed Decimals. Complete Questions 9-13 for Monday.

Religion - Today we discussed what it means to ask ourselves "What Would Jesus Do?". We are each decorating a small logo illustrating what we can do to act as Jesus would, which will hang in our classroom above our doorway.

Newsletters were sent home today, with the youngest student from each family at St. Peter. If you are the youngest in your family that attends this school, bring your newsletter home to your parents.

A note was sent home today with details about Picture Day, which will be on Thursday, September 19th for Grade 5 students.

ELA - Today we started our first assignment of Grade 5, which tasked us with creating and illustrating a chronological timeline of our lives.

Math - Over the next week, we will be reviewing Grade 4 math. Today, we covered place value. Complete Questions 1-8 for tomorrow.

Computers - Today we had our first day in the computer lab. We spent most of the time trouble-shooting technical issues, but we also had a chance to introduce Typing.com! All students in the class have a username and password, which follow this format:

Feel free to log in to typing.com at home and practice! We will assign lessons to be completed as homework at different times throughout the year.

Today we had a tour of the classroom and discussed our general classroom procedures.

We spent much of the morning unpacking our school supplies and organizing our workspace.

If you had any school supplies that were missing, please bring them to school ASAP. If there is any difficulty in getting these school supplies, please have your parents send me an email, and I can find supplemental supplies for you.

All students are asked to bring 1 additional Duotang that was not on the school supply list, by the end of next week. This duotang must have front and back pockets.

This afternoon, we spent time as a class discussing and writing our class rules. These rules were printed and signed by all members of our class, and are on display at the back of the room. There are also available HERE.

Welcome to the 2019/2020 school year!
This morning, we got to know eachother with a name game, wrote nametags for our desks, and talked about some classroom expectations.

Each student will be bringing home a note, to read with their parent/guardian. Please go through this note with your child, and fill out/return the last page by September 6th. The note can be viewed HERE.

Tomorrow, we will be unpacking our school supplies.
