Religion - Our last week of school of 2023 is also the 3rd week of Advent. We gathered for one last school liturgy today before Christmas, and continued work in our Advent Flipbooks. Finish (writing and decorating) all pages of your flipbook for Wednesday, when we will take time to assemble them.
Math - We continued working on solving equations. Both grades worked on the same problems today from the Gr. 5 book. Complete the following questions for tomorrow: Pg 27, Qs 1-4.
Word Work - We started work on our Take-Home Quiz on sentence structure. Complete and hand yours in by Thursday.
Christmas Holidays: No School Dec 23-Jan 7th. Return to school Jan 8th.

Math - Today we learned about variables, and how to use them to represent unknown numbers, and predict the outcomes of patterns. We'll continue working on this concept tomorrow.
ELA - We had time to finish our rough copies of our Great Canadian Mail Race assignment, and started editing and revising our drafts. Make sure to check over your rough copy with me by Friday. We'll have time to type our good copies during computers next week.
Social Studies - We had our Canadian provinces/territories/capital cities quiz today.
Arts - We'll be sketching our Christmas Canvases with pencil later this week. Make sure you've got a rough-copy plan/outline in place!

Our entire school enjoyed a movie together this afternoon, as part of our Popcorn fundraiser!
3-Way Conferences next week. We will fill our Term 1 portfolios on Monday.Math - Large-number division has many steps, and so we spend more time practicing this skill than most of our other learning targets. We took 1 more class to practice in our textbooks today. Finish these practice problems for Monday.

FYI: On Monday, we will work on a final short practice assignment, before moving onto our unit review. Our Unit 2 Test will be on Wednesday, November 29th.
ELA - Apologies to those students who still needed to present their Oral Readings today. I will ensure that your group gets time to practice again, before you present.
Reminder: November Book Reviews are due on the 30th. Make sure you are well into your book for this month!
Arts - Make sure that all of your Term 1 art tasks are in your art portfolio! I'll be assessing your Term 1 portfolios over the weekend.

Math - We started our new unit on Operations by practicing strategies which help us with our multiplication facts. All students will have the same practice questions, due for tomorrow:

ELA - We had a chance to move on to writing our rough copies for our Creative Writing stories today. Reminder that your Pre-Writing task was due today, and should be handed in. If not, finish and submit this ASAP.
Word Work - We had our Week 2 spelling words today, and started with our Week 3 wordlists.
Swimming on Friday Afternoon - Bring permission slip by Wednesday!
Beaver Creek Field Trip on Wednesday:
-Bus will load right after announcements, so don't be late that day!
- Be sure to bring a Lunch, Weather-appropriate clothing (we will be hiking outside for most of the day), Backpack, FILLED WATER BOTTLE (There is no drinkable water available on-site, so we must bring our own water).
- We'll be back at Bishop Pocock shortly before 3:00pm.

Math - We had a practice assignment covering our skills from yesterday, with Grade 5's comparing and ordering decimals, and Grade 6's comparing and ordering Integers. Complete and hand in these for tomorrow, so I can check for your understanding. We will have our first Unit Test on Thursday, October 12th.
ELA - We had time to finish our GROSS story assignments, which are due Thursday (Outside of Daily 5, we won't be getting more class time to finish this).
Religion - We reflected on the things and people in our lives which we are thankful for, and wrote about it in our Reflection Journals.
Computers - We continued on typing.com. Finish up to the end of "C, N, and G" for next week.
Tomorrow:
- We're walking to Holy Spirit church shortly after 9am, for our school mass. Be sure to dress comfortably for the walk.
-Grade 6's are heading to Holy Cross for our Beginner Band Workshop in the afternoon. Return permission slips for tomorrow morning! There are extras on the Reminders board.
-Cross Country team City Champs after school! Runners, refer to the note sent home yesterday for your starting time. Be sure to arrive 30 minutes before your race.

Goal Setting - Today we worked to set Academic and Personal goals for ourselves that are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely). Our goals will be displayed on our desks throughout Term 1 to remind us of our commitments, and we will reflect back on them in November.
Math - Today, we got extra practice on the skills we have covered in our Place Value unit so far. Whenever we get these practice handouts, they will be handed in so that I can check for your understanding, and see if anyone needs extra support.
Grade 5's worked on representing large numbers up to 1 million.
Grade 6's reviewed representing large numbers, and analyzing word problems with large numbers.
Complete and hand in this practice assignment for tomorrow.
Arts - We had time to work on our turtles, inspired by the work of Leah Dorion. As we prepare for our school's Metis Flag Raising ceremony this November, we will be exploring and connecting to more of the symbolism and style of Leah Dorion's paintings and stories.
We are collecting donations for cancer research this week, as we'll have our Terry Fox Walk on Friday. We'll chat more about this as a class tomorrow.

It's been a great Welcome Week! Today we had Formal Friday, and came together in prayer for our first school Liturgy.
Upcoming Field Trip - Beaver Creek - October 18th.
We will need 2 adult volunteers to accompany us and aid in supervision for this field trip. If a parent/guardian is able to attend that day, please contact me ASAP. A criminal record check will need to be in place for adult volunteers, but we can provide a form to waive the fee for this procedure.
Math - Today we looked at place value of large numbers. Grade 5's explored numbers up to 100,000, while Grade 6's extended their understanding through to the trillions. With today's liturgy, we didn't get much class time to work on today's questions, so don't worry about them for homework. We will return to it on Monday.
Art - We had time to finish our Class Rules mini posters today. Make sure that you've also finished and handed in your puzzle, jar, and name strip for our Shine board.

Next week is our last week of Grade 5! Here's what you can expect as we prepare for the end of the school year:
Monday: Term 3 PortfoliosTuesday: Desk clean-out. Bring bags/boxes, as some school supplies will start coming home.
Wednesday: Full Class clean-up. Most remaining school supplies will be sent home.
Thursday: Last Day of Grade 5! Feel free to bring snacks to enjoy together over a movie in the morning. Assembly in the afternoon, with WWJD raffle and year-end slideshow.
Math - We continued our review of Grade 5 numeracy, focusing today on adding/subtracting decimals, multiplication, and division. Complete your review up to the end of Q 20 for tomorrow.
Computers - We had our final 3-minute assessment on Typing.com today! Log into your account at home to show your parents how much your skills have growth throughout the year!
Religion - We had a final Reflection Journal entry today, focusing on gratitude for our Grade 5 experiences. Prompt is on your Edsby religion class page. We handed in our reflection journals for assessment, with all 8 entries from Term 3.
ELA - Autobiography Readings tomorrow morning! Practice your reading this evening!
Creative Writing books will be taken in tomorrow, and your final Book Review is due Friday.

Swimming Field Trip next Tuesday afternoon. Return your permission forms by Friday. If you need an extra copy, they are posted at the back of the classroom.
Term 3 Assignment Deadline is Monday, June 19th, at 3:30pm. Refer to your assignment audits to make sure you have handed in all of your tasks for grading by then. Reminder that all students were given a second copy to bring home to their parents. Let me know if you need a new copy printed.
ELA - We had another class to work on typing up our Future Autobiography good copies. These are due tomorrow. Make sure your GoogleDoc is completed and ready to be printed first-thing tomorrow morning.
Math - We started our Unit 8 review today, in preparation for our test on Friday. We will continue working on it tomorrow and Thursday.
Spelling - We wrote our Week 17 quiz today.
Arts - Our Comic Style Portrait series is due on Friday. The last day to finish any incomplete art assignments before your Term 3 report cards is next Friday, June 23rd.
Religion - Our Beatitude Commitment is due today. Make sure to hand in your good copy, along with your rough copy and completed self-assessment.
Hot Lunch on Thursday.
St. Peter Feast Day - Family Picnic on Friday at 11:45. Our whole school will be eating lunch outside that day. Families are encouraged to join. Feel free to bring picnic blankets or lawn chairs. Families will provide their own food and drinks.

Math - We reviewed Translations today, and worked on a practice assignment. Complete and hand this in for tomorrow.
Religion - We continued our discussion of the Beatitudes today, and began an assignment to represent our understanding of them. This task is posted on our Edsby religion class, and is due next Friday.
ELA - We have started our final Book Review for the year! Reminder that you are free to choose a graphic novel for this month, and that its due date is June 24th. Also remember, your Pre-Writing for your Future Autobiography must be complete for tomorrow, so that you can get rolling on your rough copy (Due June 7th).
Computers - We continued our work on Typing.com today, by completing the Intermediate lessons. We are preparing for our final typing test later this month, so keep practicing!
Swimming - We have confirmed a visit to Riversdale outdoor pool on the afternoon of June 20th. A note and permission form will be sent out later next week.

Social Studies - We had time to work on our Rough Copies for our travel brochures. Remember that your rough copy should include your layout, AND an edited/revised copy of the written portion. Also remember, students need to show me a completed rough copy before moving on to their Good Copies. Deadline to complete your rough copy is Friday.
Math - We had time to finish our assignment from yesterday. Complete and hand in this task for tomorrow. Don't forget, after you finish your 3 questions and answers, to write which dice you would choose, if your goal was to roll the highest number possible?
Outdoor Track meet Friday morning! We did not practice our Long Jump today, as the air quality was so poor outside. If air quality remains bad, the track meet may be postponed to early next week. Mr. Johnson will make that decision Friday morning, so definitely come prepared with water bottle and comfortable active clothing that day.
ELA - Our final presentations for our Plays start tomorrow! Practice your lines, and make sure your group has everything you need to present.

Student Retreat tomorrow - Students will spend most of their day tomorrow participating in activities focusing on faith and prayer, facilitated by PULSE Catholic School Retreats.
Math - Today we learned about different types of quadrilaterals, and some of their attributes. Complete the following questions for tomorrow:

ELA - We spent time on our Group Creative Tasks today. By now, all groups should be well into creating their scripts.
Social Studies - We continued work on our Land Acknowledgement presentations on google slides today. We will get 1 more class to finish this tomorrow, and begin presenting them on Wednesday.
Arts - 1-Point Perspective rooms are due on Thursday.

Lent Almsgiving: Bring your non-perishable food items for Friendship Inn to the pit at the front of the school.

Math - We continued working on our Unit Reviews. We will take time to go over any requested questions tomorrow as a class, so make sure you have looked at all of the assigned questions by then. Use the extra-practice skill pages in the Math corner to focus on skills you are still struggling with.
Health - We finalized our Term 3 goals today. These will be fixed to our desks for the rest of the year, to remind us of our commitment to ourselves.
REMINDER: Health Journals start tomorrow. Remember your sleep, water, healthy habits, and food in the morning. Most students find it easiest to fill their journal out at the start of Daily 5 each day.
Spelling - We wrote our Week 12 words, and got our Week 13 lists today.

Spelling - We had a quiz on our Week 11 words, and got our Week 12 Word Lists.
Social Studies - We had a short reading on the way that the Federal Government works, and answered questions about the details. We finished and corrected them during class time. Make sure these are complete and in your Social Studies book by tomorrow, as they are part of our notes for this unit.

Activity Day tomorrow! I sent all parents an Edsby message with more details today.
Bowling students have typical school hours.
Table Mountain students arrive at 6:30 tomorrow morning. Read through the Edsby message tonight together with your parent, to ensure you are fully prepared for the day.
Term 2 Assignment Deadline is Monday. Any assignments handed in after this will still be graded fully, but not until after our Term 2 report cards are written. Make sure to complete all tasks on your Assignment Audits!
ELA - February Book Reviews were due today.
Math - We practiced finding different rectangles of equal area today. Finish and hand in the practice assignment for Thursday.
Health - We started a task to research different Vitamins and Minerals, and had time on computers to work on this. This task is due on Monday.
Religion - As we move through Lent, we will be exploring different types of Prayer. Today, we looked at examples of Jesus in Prayer throughout the Gospels.
